Statement 2009:

This body of work, Sea floor, came about whilst researching the idea of calenture, which is a state of delirium suffered by mariners causing them to suffer hallucinations.

These visions turned the oceans surface into the fields of the homelands they longed for. Often timely correlations appear between my reading and my art work. I had begun collecting seaweed from local beaches on the basis of its 'rich and strange' ness and had begun playing with scanned images of its potential pattern motifs. This 'playing' lead me to overlay seaweed motifs onto domestic motif and pattern from old pieces of linoleum.

The domestic floor thus becomes the sea floor and in Shakespeare's words, "doth suffer a sea-change into something rich and strange."

This work features scanned images of seaweed collected along South Australian South Coast beaches. When the weed is first collected its state is 'rich and strange' but is soon muted through exposure to sun and oxygen. These multi-layered prints are taking the drab weed and attempting to reflect on those transformations.
