2008 SALA EXHIBITION Bev Southcott, Sera Waters, Gena Dinkoff

3 - 17 August, 2008

Bio
Beverley Southcott is a mid career artist. Beverley has participated in exhibitions internationally, nationally and in South Australia that included photography, painting and installation.

Southcott's recent work has been selected and included for major Australian art awards and competitions.

My theoretical on going research is primarily within relevant contemporary art theory, cultural and theological studies that include these subject matters: the 19th century and the post modern sublime; the urban city environment; surveillance; consumerism; globalisation and post industrialism.

Beverley Southcott - art biographical details

Within the corporate controlled urban spaces such as the enclosed shopping mall or the high rise office block protected by highly advanced technological electronic surveillance equipment may be where moments of wonder can occur. My recent photographic images are reflective of meditative moments that encapsulate the everyday and the ordinary within predominantly western globalised consumerist cultures. The images are not necessarily based on traditional and religious iconic references but reflect the tension between desire and negation of consumerism and global imagery that permeate the everyday. Resulting in imagery that may reflect a temporary sublimeness that transcends from, or co-exists with the banal and the ordinary.

My theoretical research for this series of works are based on relevant contemporary art theory and cultural studies on the post-modern sublime, surveillance and controlled societies, consumerism, globalisation and post industrialism

Now 'n Ever

The Now 'n Ever photo media series represent the contemporary sublime which can or may co exist within every day living. This is where one can be enmeshed in the every day, though some how still respond to other moments of wonder or hopefulness within our daily programs. Perhaps to understand the meaning of infinity is to always acknowledge that moment of the 'now'.

The notion of barriers, netting and flags in these images are metaphoric of rebuilding or re constructing and re acknowledging; or in another sense they can become psychological barricades that block the 'in roads' to spaces of otherness.
