I am interested in how drawing can physically occupy the spaces we inhabit.
I think of drawing in both two and three dimensional terms, as something
which can occupy space, generate place, as well as being representational
of it. My practice is largely sculptural and installation based, grounded in
drawing with a deep set interest in process and the language of materials.
In my work I have used iconic everyday motifs such as the house as a means
to investigate how we invest meaning. Everyday themes and materials such
as street directories and dressmaking patterns have been a means of
connection and a way of investigating social and cultural attitudes towards
the familiar. I am particularly intrigued by two dimensional languages such
as maps, patterns, diagrams and the written word used to describe the three
dimensional world and our experience and interaction with space; as
representations of reality and a means to identify and locate place. I look at
place and how it affects our sense of self. Place being somewhere we travel
to as well as something we carry with us from one geographical location to
another. Place as a means of ordering reality, a way of understanding new
spaces and locations; place as an imposed notion of space, a way of
identification and organization.
